about
Stemlit is a literary magazine dedicated to work at the intersection of science and creative writing. It probes the reciprocal influence of the two: how scientific inquiry can provoke emotion and provide matter for art, while creative writing can bring new dimensions to the meaning, experience, and human impact of science. To that end, Stemlit seeks poetry, art, and hybrid work that engages ideas, language and experiences from the natural sciences, technology, engineering, mathematics, medicine, and research.

Ariadna (Arina) Maksin is a poet and neurobiology researcher. Often recognizing metaphors in anatomical pathways and emotional nuance in scientific phenomena, Arina founded Stemlit to investigate the reciprocal influence of science and poetry on a larger scale. Arina is an alumna of the Iowa Young Writers Studio, three-time Scholastic Art and Writing Awards Gold Key awardee, and recipient of the Laidlaw Scholarship for her research investigating KCC2 function in opioid addiction. She splits her life between the West and East Coast, and splits her time dissecting either diction or brains.
